Finance minister tells parliament BFIU froze about 55,000 MFS accounts

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury told parliament that the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit had frozen or suspended transactions in about 55,000 mobile financial service accounts linked to online gambling and digital hundi, The Business Standard reported on 24–25 June 2026.

He said Bangladesh Bank had issued a directive on 28 May instructing MFS providers to keep merchants and customers under continuous surveillance for possible gambling involvement and to inform law enforcement if suspicious activity was detected.

The minister also said the BFIU had submitted an intelligence report on online gambling to the Criminal Investigation Department in May, and that CID had filed a case and was investigating.

Reporting from The Business Standard, June 2026. The 55,000 figure covers gambling and hundi together.
